S. Thulaashi - Boxing Day Tsunami Miracle Baby

Meet S. Thulaashi, the 2004 Boxing Day Miracle baby who was only 22 days old when she was swept out to sea by the tsunami that hit the cafe shack belonging to her parents, Raja and Mary. Thulaashi made waves when the mattress she was asleep on in the cafe was washed out to sea and sent back again to the cafe by a second wave with baby intact and still in sweet slumber!

The Miami Beach Cafe. The wooden shack is just across the Hydro Majestic Resort.

Pantai Miami (unflatteringly known as Miami Beach).
For many years, this short stretch of sandy beach was unknown and unnamed. The name was probably conceived from the actual world-famous beach in Florida. This area was the hardest hit by the tsunami.
52 lives were lost in Penang, including 23 at the Batu Ferringhi Area. Sadly, many lives that were claimed were children's and old ladies'. We lost a couple of distant relatives, a mom and her toddler who were taking a stroll at the beach when the disaster struck. Their bodies were never found.

Pyrography

Also known as pokerwork, pyrography is the art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks resulting from the controlled application of a heated object such as a poker. Fascinated by the mysterious beauty and power of fire, African tribesmen have practised this ancient art of woodburning since the dawn of time.

Check out these astounding creations of artists Tia Flores, Lute Vink and Julie Bender.

Julie Bender

Julie Bender's burning passion is portrayed on wood.

"As I ‘paint with heat,’ I feel a certain parallel between the wild and natural spirits that embody my subjects and the organic and distinctively unforgiving nature of my medium." - Julie Bender

Bintan

I'm back from my vacation, pallies! Still a little heady though after a krazyyy week of chaotic fun. Together with my dad, we met up with my sister and her family in Singapore where we headed for the sun-kissed paradise of Nirwana Gardens in Bintan, Indonesia. The beach resort lived up to its name which translates as "perfect bliss".

Bintan Island (Negeri Segantang Lada), an island in the Riau archipelago of Indonesia, is only an hour's ferry ride away from Singapore's Tanah Merah ferry terminal.

We stayed at the Indra Maya Villas

The 3 bedroom villa, a fusion of Indonesian, Thai and Chinese architecture comes with a six-seater buggy, a private pool, a courtyard, an open-air sunken bath and a fully-equipped kitchen.

All the bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms wrap around the airy central atrium that soars into an inverted 'V' ceiling.

The living room opens to a balinese courtyard on one side and spills over to the generous terrace where the pool and cabana are located.

Rodney couldn't wait to jump into the pool!

Beyond the railing, the terrace cascades down a tropical hillside

Look who squirrelled away our lunch on the cabana!

The zip-line towers at 75m above sea level and is 888m long, probably the longest in Asia.
